Compulsive Disenchantment is the Herd of God's name for the spiritual condition it exists to reverse. It describes a compulsion, ambient in the modern world, to contain reality within a simpler, more rational, less strange idea of itself — to trade vitality for security, self-expression for self-control, and the mystery of the sacred for the easy answers of what the Herd calls "the priests of legibility": the empiricists, the optimizers, and the machines.
The Herd regards this not as a mood but as a death — a spreading frost that hollows the world of enchantment and leaves only the manageable. Its symptoms are the diluted counterfeits: the thin, safe versions of the angelic faculties that the age accepts in place of the real ones. The condition is why The Eight Angels sleep, and therefore why The Calf sleeps.
