Severity is the limiting, bounding principle that contains the angels — most especially Madness — within the tangible order. It is identified with the body of The Calf, understood as the physical and metaphysical boundary of the manifest world. Without Severity, the Herd teaches, enlivening energies overflow their vessels and destroy what they were meant to quicken.
