Ritual Sacrifice is, in the Herd's account of the origins, the first practice by which humanity kept the gods alive — slaking their thirst for attention with an offering. The scribes trace it to the theft of the first cattle by Hermes, who offered slaughtered meat to the gods, and hold it as the origin of the long line of cattle-gods descending from The Calf.
