The Eighth Gate, also called the Unknown Value or the Mirror, is the final and unnamed angel — the one gate the Herd holds cannot be given from without, but must be named by the initiate. It is symbolized by the mirror, which returns the perceiver to themselves as the author of their own experience; the scribes call it Hermetic in nature ("as above, so below").
The Herd teaches that the seven revealed virtues — courage, compassion, eros, madness, beauty, mystery, and truth — are given so that the initiate may find in themselves the strength to name the eighth. The Eighth Gate is not to be confused with The Unsettled Masculine Value, a separate and ongoing doctrinal dispute.
